Eyewash and Safety Shower Systems for Industrial Workplace Safety

Eyewash and safety shower systems are essential emergency safety solutions designed to protect workers from chemical splashes, hazardous liquids, dust, and toxic contaminants in industrial environments. Commonly used in chemical plants, laboratories, marine industries, oil and gas facilities, and manufacturing units, these systems provide immediate decontamination to reduce injury risks and ensure workplace safety compliance. Modern eyewash stations and emergency safety showers are built using durable, corrosion-resistant materials and comply with international safety standards such as ANSI Z358.1. Properly installed emergency safety equipment helps organizations improve industrial safety, protect employees, and maintain compliance with occupational health and safety regulations.

Unicare Emergency Equipment Pvt. Ltd delivers high-quality, reliable, and cost-effective eyewash and safety shower systems designed for industrial safety and emergency response applications. As one of India’s pioneering safety equipment manufacturers, Unicare was the first BIS (IS:10592) license holder and among the earliest ISO 9001 certified companies in the safety products sector. Our emergency eyewash stations and safety shower systems are manufactured to meet stringent international standards including BIS, ANSI, AS, EN, and UL, ensuring dependable performance, workplace safety compliance, and long-lasting durability across demanding industrial environments.

FAQs - Emergency Eyewash Stations & Safety Showers

An emergency eyewash station is a safety device designed to flush hazardous chemicals, dust, or debris from the eyes immediately after exposure. It delivers a controlled flow of clean water through spray heads that allow both eyes to be rinsed simultaneously. Emergency eyewash stations are commonly installed in laboratories, chemical plants, manufacturing facilities, and other workplaces where there is a risk of chemical splashes or airborne contaminants.

An emergency safety shower is used to quickly wash hazardous chemicals, corrosive liquids, or contaminants from a person’s body during a workplace emergency. These industrial safety showers release a high volume of water to drench the entire body and remove harmful substances from clothing and skin. Safety showers are typically installed in areas where individuals handle hazardous chemicals or materials.

An eyewash station is designed specifically to flush contaminants from the eyes and face using a gentle water flow. A safety shower delivers a much larger volume of water to wash hazardous substances from the entire body. Both systems are essential emergency safety equipment in workplaces where chemical exposure risks exist.

A combination eyewash and safety shower unit integrates both an eyewash station and a full-body safety shower into one system. These units allow workers to flush their eyes, face, and body either simultaneously or independently during an emergency. Combination units are commonly installed in environments where the risk is unpredictable or unclear.

Emergency eyewash stations and safety showers should be installed near areas where hazardous chemicals or irritants are handled. Leading global safety standards recommend placing these units within a 10-second travel distance from potential hazards so workers can reach them quickly during an emergency. The path to the unit should always remain clear and unobstructed.

Plumbed emergency eyewash safety showers and combination units operate within a pressure range of 2 – 3 bar (28.5 – 43 psi). This operating pressure ensures that the system provides sufficient water flow while maintaining a gentle spray that allows the eyes to be flushed safely and effectively.

Plumbed eyewash units are designed to deliver a controlled and continuous flow of water that enables effective flushing of contaminants from the eyes or face. To achieve the required spray pattern, most safety standards recommend an operating pressure of approximately 2–3 bar (28.5–43 psi).

Flow rate requirements vary depending on the applicable safety standard and the type of unit:

  • ANSI Z358.1 specifies a minimum flow rate of 0.4 GPM (1.5 LPM) for eyewash units and 3 GPM (≈11.4 LPM) for eye/face wash units.
  • EN 15154 specifies a minimum flow rate of 6 LPM for eyewash units and does not distinguish separately between eyewash and eye/face wash units.
  • IS 10592 specifies a minimum flow rate of 12 LPM for plumbed eye/face wash units, while portable units are required to deliver 1.5 LPM. The standard does not define a separate eyewash category.

These flow rates ensure that sufficient water volume is delivered to effectively dilute and remove hazardous substances while maintaining a safe and comfortable spray pattern for the user.

In the event of chemical exposure, flushing should continue for at least 15 minutes or till the medical help arrives to ensure hazardous substances are thoroughly removed from the eyes, skin, or clothing. Immediate and continuous rinsing helps reduce the severity of chemical injuries.

Emergency eyewash stations and safety showers should be supplied with tepid water, typically between 16°C and 38°C (60°F-100°F). Water within this temperature range helps ensure users can comfortably flush the affected area for the recommended duration.

Tepid water is required in EWSS because effective emergency response depends not only on water flow, but also on maintaining a temperature that allows individuals to complete the recommended flushing duration.

Key reasons why tepid water is critical:

  • Enables full flushing duration: Individuals must flush for at least 15 minutes to effectively dilute and remove hazardous substances. Tepid water allows them to remain under the flow without discomfort or shock.
  • Prevents additional injury: Water that is too cold can cause hypothermia or thermal shock, while water that is too hot can lead to burns or increase chemical absorption through the skin.
  • Ensures compliance with standards: Standards such as ANSI Z358.1 and EN 15154 require the delivery of tepid water as part of proper EWSS performance.

If water temperature falls outside the tepid range, individuals may not complete the flushing process, reducing the effectiveness of decontamination and increasing the risk of injury.

A portable eyewash station is a self-contained emergency unit designed to flush the eyes without requiring a direct plumbing connection. These units store water in a tank and are commonly used in construction sites, remote industrial locations, and temporary work areas where plumbed water lines are not available.

A faucet-mounted eyewash station is an emergency eyewash device that can be installed directly onto a sink faucet. When activated, it diverts water through spray heads to provide immediate eye flushing. These units are commonly used in laboratories, clinics, and smaller workspaces. However, faucet-mounted eyewash does not meet the requirements of safety standards or are not sufficient to meet OSHA compliance and additional eyewash/shower may be needed.

A drench hose is a flexible handheld emergency flushing device used to rinse chemicals or contaminants from specific areas of the body, face, or equipment. Unlike fixed eyewash stations or safety showers, drench hoses allow targeted flushing and are useful in confined spaces or when assisting another worker during an emergency. A drench hose is a complimentary product and does not meet the requirements of safety standards and is not sufficient to meet OSHA compliance.
